Who Was the Suffering Man
Described by the Prophet?
|
Dear Reader,
The Zabur (Psalms) is found in the Old Testament. Psalm 22 was written by the prophet David 1000 years before the birth of Jesus the Messiah.
In this Psalm, the prophet David wrote the pitiful lament of a man in extreme suffering. In the following portions, there are verses from Psalm 22 followed by verses written over 1000 years later in the Injil (New Testament).
As you read the verses from Psalm 22 along with the verses from the Injil you will be able to understand whether the prophet was describing his own sufferings or those of someone else. You will also be able to understand how the sufferings of this man were the means of great blessing for you and all mankind.

1. Who Was The Suffering Man Forsaken By God?
- What did the prophet David write?
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning? O my God ,I cry in the daytime, but you do not hear; and in the night season, and am not silent. (Psalm 22:1, 2)
- What is written in the Injil?
And it was the third hour (9h00), and they crucified Jesus. And when the sixth hour (12h00) had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (15h00). And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" (Mark 15:22,33,34)
2. Who Was The Suffering Man Humiliated By The People?
- What did the prophet David write?
But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people. All they who see me laugh me to scorn, they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted in the Lord that he would deliver him; let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. (Psalm 22:6-8)
- What is written in the Injil?
They that passed by hurled insults at Jesus, wagging their heads, and saying, You who destroy the temple and build it in three days save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise the chief priests, also mocking with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God. (Matthew 27:39-43)
3. Who Was The Suffering Man That Was Stared At By The People?
- What did the prophet David write?
I count all my bones; they look and stare at me. (Psalm 22:17)
- What is written in the Injil?
And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah, the chosen of God. (Luke 23:35)
4. Who Was The Man Whose Clothing Was Divided By Casting Lots?
- What did the prophet David write?
They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. (Psalm 22:18)
- What is written in the Injil?
Then they crucified Jesus, and divided his garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. (Matthew 27:35)
5. Who Was The Suffering Man That Was Thirsty?
- What did the prophet David write?
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue clings to my jaws; and you have brought me to the dust of death. (Psalm 22:15)
- What is written in the Injil?
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar, and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:28-30)
6. Who Was The Suffering Man That Was Pierced In His Hands And Feet?
- What did the prophet David write?
For dogs have surrounded me; the assembly of the wicked has enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. (Psalm 22:16)
- What is written in the Injil?
After the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, the Apostle John wrote:
But Thomas, called Didymus, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said to him, We have seen the Lord, But he said to them, Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger in the print of his side, I will not believe. And after eight days his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them; then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace to you! Then he said to Thomas, Reach your finger here, and look at my hands; and reach your hand here and put it into my side; Do not be unbelieving. And Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. (John 20:24-29)
- According to the Injil, after He rose from the dead, Jesus said to the Believers:
These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning me. And he opened their understandings, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then he said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations. (Luke 24:44-47)
- Dear Reader, the Injil says to you today:
This is the faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Messiah Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15)
God will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Messiah Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all. (1 Timothy 2:4-6)
For God made Messiah, who knew no sin, to be a sin offering for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
For Messiah also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit. (1 Peter 3:18)
Wherefore, God also has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name, That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, And that every tongue should confess that Jesus the Messiah is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)
